The Hell-Box Letter Foundry

Border types being cast on our Monotype Super Caster

Border types being cast on our Monotype Super Caster

We have our own type foundry at Letterpress Works, comprising a Monotype Super Caster and Monotype Composition Caster.

Both machines date from the 1970s, originally employed at the book printers Staples of  Rochester, Kent.

We have named it The Hell-Box Letter Foundry. To printers of old the ‘hell-box’ was where all the broken and worn out type was thrown, ready to be smelted down into ingots and re-born into perfect new type. Describes what we do exactly!
