Our title bar above shows an extract from a 17th century etching depicting of the print works of Johannes Gutenberg around 1460. Gutenberg is credited with the invention of moveable type and if he were to visit Letterpress Works today much would be familiar to him. We still employ the letterpress process that reigned supreme for over 500 years.
At Letterpress Works we print only by letterpress, using metal type and plates, onto the finest paper and card stock. The end product is distinctive: It is tactile, it is permanent, it stands apart from the mass produced fare of todays ‘copy shop’
Just like Gutenberg we cast all our own type from molten type metal, but no longer in the hand mould. We use Monotype, Intertype and Ludlow casting machinery from the 1960s, rescued from the scrapman over the last 20 years. Our ‘newest’ press dates from that time and our oldest and most prized press is a pre war Victoria platen once owned by Will Carter, the fine press printer and type designer, the founder of the Rampant Lions Press.
